| 2008 Corvette Z06 Coupe |
The Corvette Z06 was developed alongside the Le Mans GT1 class-winning Corvette C6.R race car and benefits directly from an extensive transfer of motorsport technologies, engineering know-how and advanced materials to deliver blistering performance.
Under the bonnet, the hand-built 512ps 7.0-litre V8 power plant features unique components fashioned from advanced lightweight titanium and a dry-sump lubrication system. The lightweight yet exceptionally strong aluminium backbone chassis provides outstanding rigidity, while carbon fibre body and floor panels keep weight to an absolute minimum. A dual mode exhaust balances the needs of quietness and power, while large, powerful cross-drilled brakes provide immense stopping power.
The interior features a number of unique elements that accentuate this Corvette's performance credentials, but also ensure a luxurious and comfortable driving experience. Drivers benefit from a head-up display and cruise control and both occupants can enjoy the premium Bose sound system and heated leather seats embroidered with the Z06 logo.
Astounding engine and transmission
With a maximum output of 512 ps at 6300 rpm (up from 505 ps in 2007) and maximum torque of 637 Nm at 4800 rpm (up from 635 Nm), the 7.0-litre LS7 V8 powering the 2008 Corvette Z06 is the most powerful passenger car engine available from GM in Europe. With that immense power available, the 1418 kg Z06 catapults from a standing start to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds and to a top speed of 198 mph.
The LS7 engine is painstakingly assembled by hand at GM Powertrain's Performance Build Centre in Wixom, Michigan, using manufacturing techniques associated with the building of racing engines.
Although sharing the same basic V8 architecture as the Corvette C6's LS3 6.2-litre engine, the LS7 incorporates a number of unique components with race car origins. Bespoke cylinder block, exhaust manifold and aluminium cylinder head designs and lightweight titanium connecting rods, intake valves, pushrods and valve springs are each carefully engineered to reduce weight while increasing performance and durability.
A dry sump system keeps the engine fully lubricated during the highest cornering loads. And the exhaust silencers each feature a vacuum-actuated outlet valve that controls exhaust noise during low load operations, but which opens for maximum power when required.
At the rear of the engine a single-mass flywheel and lightweight, high-capacity clutch transmit torque to the rear-mounted 'transaxle'. The six-speed short-throw manual transmission is rear-mounted integrally with the limited-slip differential for optimum weight distribution and traction.
Fine-tuned suspension, wheels, tyres and brakes
The Corvette Z06 builds on the traditional strengths of the overall Corvette design philosophy, with its low-weight, high-strength backbone structure, cored composite floors, enclosed centre transmission tunnel, rear-mounted gearbox and differential, cast-aluminium short-long arm (double wishbone) suspension and transverse leaf spring design. These are combined with a unique rigid aluminium body structure, and exclusive wheels, tyres, brakes and rear anti-roll bar, to deliver race-bred handling.
The Z06 retains the 2686 mm wheelbase of other Corvette models, but features a wider track - increased by 30 mm at the front and 38 mm at the rear - for even greater high-speed handling potential. Upgraded springs and optimised suspension and steering geometry, along with harder directional control arm bushings, increased castor angle and an added rear roll stabiliser, result in a faster car that is also easier to drive, with more body control, better traction and more stability in corners.
The Z06 is fitted with 10-spoke cast-spun aluminium wheels, 18-inch at the front and 19-inch at the rear. Wide tyres (275/35 ZR18 front and 325/30 ZR19 rear) maximise the contact patch on the road for optimum grip and traction. The Goodyear Extended Mobility run-flat tyres reduce the chance of a sudden 'flat', but still allow the vehicle to achieve lateral acceleration of more than 1 g.
Complementing the suspension system is an equally capable braking system with ventilated and cross-drilled discs at each corner. The 355 mm front discs have six-piston calipers that use six individual brake pads, while the 340 mm rear discs have four-piston calipers, also with four individual brake pads. These powerful brakes give exceptional stopping power. With intelligent cooling thanks to the Z06's bespoke air ducting, they provide excellent fade resistance and pad life, even on the track.
Four-channel ABS anti-lock braking, along with traction control and Active Handling (ESP) operate together to provide a strong, but unobtrusive safety net during spirited driving.
Aggressive exterior expresses performance credentials
The exterior styling of the Corvette Z06 combines the unmistakably distinctive design cues of the modern Corvette with an aggressively poised stance and a sprinkling of practical, modern refinements. For example, the exposed front headlamps feature Xenon HID technology. And the clean, low-drag lines are helped by the exclusion of mechanical door handles in favour of keyless electronic access and the integration of the radio antenna into the windscreen glass.
The Z06's sharply defined front wings and short front overhang contribute to a taut, purposeful front-end design. A wide front bumper, large grille opening, low-mounted splitter and 'Gurney flaps' along the sides provide aerodynamic downforce.
Meanwhile, the trailing edge of the front wheel arches are contoured to reduce drag and large air extractor vents are located behind the wheels.
Bold, simple rear-end styling emphasises the short rear overhang. The Z06 has a subtle elevated spoiler which still provides sufficient downforce to balance that generated by the front splitter without adversely increasing aerodynamic drag.
Wide rear wings with flared wheel arches encompass the massive rear tyres. A brake cooling air scoop in front of the wheel arch visually balances the rear bumper outlet, while four round tail lamps and four large circular stainless-steel exhaust tips, integrated into the rear diffuser, neatly complete the circular theme.
Superior interior comfort for everyday driving
The Corvette hallmark dual cockpit interior design features high quality craftsmanship and functionality. Efficient packaging and a relatively long wheelbase (2686 mm) ensure generous interior space and class-leading luggage capacity (634 litres).
Race-inspired, the interior is designed to ensure the Z06 is still a car for every day driving. Its lightweight seats, shaped to firmly secure the driver and passenger when cornering, are leather clad and heated. A customised full leather interior pack is optional (£2650). Dual-zone climate control, cruise control and powered driver's seat with preset memory are standard features.
Another advanced technology included as standard is the menu-selectable head-up display (HUD) - projected on to the windscreen - which enhances safety by allowing drivers to focus on the road while still monitoring vehicle speed and other critical information. The two settings, 'Street' and 'Track', are each pre-programmed to display information relevant for each respective situation.
The Z06 also boasts a Bose seven speaker audio system with an in-dash six-CD changer and controls mounted on the power reach adjustable steering wheel. A GPS navigation system is available as an option (£1600).
Safety from advanced structures, materials and electronic driving aids
The Z06 features a unique aluminium fixed-roof body structure combined with advanced lightweight materials for optimum stiffness and low weight.
Perimeter chassis rails are one-piece hydroformed members featuring cast suspension mounting points, while other structural components are produced with state-of-the-art casting and extrusion manufacturing technologies.
Advanced structural composites featuring carbon fibre are bonded to the aluminium structure. The wider front wheel arches and wings, for example, are carbon composites and the passenger compartment floors combine carbon-fibre skins with an ultra-lightweight balsa wood core.
A subframe in magnesium - lighter than aluminium yet incredibly strong - cradles the engine and serves as the mount for front suspension components.
In addition to exceptional structural security, occupants also benefit from a range of passive safety systems. A number of advanced but unobtrusive handling safety systems, including traction control, Active Handling (ESP), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) contribute to maintaining sure-footedness on the road. Finally 'smart' dual stage front airbags and seat-mounted side curtain airbags are also standard.
Other routes to acquiring the Corvette dream
For Corvette enthusiasts looking for a less 'hard-core' driving experience, the sixth generation model, the 2008 C6, offers customers a choice of coupe or convertible left-hand drive models. Both versions deliver legendary American supercar performance with great style and quality - plus even better value, with 'more for less' pricing starting at £45,995, a reduction of £1,600 from last year, despite the significant engine upgrade.
For 2008, a larger 6.2-litre V8 delivers 437 ps (up 9.2%) and 575 Nm peak torque for an incredible performance that is discreetly managed by advanced Active Handling (ESP) and Traction Control systems. Both the Coupe and Convertible models are capable of 186 mph and can accelerate to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds with the manual and 4.4 seconds with the auto paddle-shift transmission. Two models are available from £45,995 to £55,495 (on-the-road) |

It will also be built in Europe - Chevrolet's new production facility in Warsaw, Poland, is about to begin full-scale production of the Aveo, which is expected to become Chevrolet's best-selling model line across Europe over the next 12 months.
Power will come from a 1.2-litre engine developing a healthy 84PS, with CO2 emissions of 132g/km. Further details of the car's UK specification and pricing will be available nearer the time. |
| Chevrolet Lacetti stars on BBC Top Gear |
The Chevrolet Lacetti is BBC Top Gear's new 'Reasonably Priced Car' and will be seen in a fun-packed celebrity shoot-out to re-establish leader board times in the first of the new series which starts on Sunday on BBC2.
The Lacetti five-seat family car range starts from £9795 and is not just reasonably priced but offers great value whether it be the five-door family hatch, the fully equipped four-door saloon or the practical family station wagon. The Top Gear 'Reasonably Priced Car' is the Lacetti CDX saloon powered by a 1.8 litre, 119 horsepower, 16-valve engine and comes fully specified with leather trim, climate control air conditioning, navigation system and traction control. This model also forms the basis for Chevrolet's World Touring Car which can be seen at the Brands Hatch round of the Championship on 21 May.
The celebrities who will drive the Lacetti in each programme will probably have little desire for traction control as they drive at the limit around the Top Gear test track in search of that coveted fastest time on the leader board. Jimmy Carr led in the last series until he was soundly beaten by Ellen MacArthur so he comes to the first programme determined to get back to the top. |
| March 2006 start of diesel production for Chevrolet |
In March 2006, production of the new diesel engines for Chevrolet's European range of vehicles will start at the new powertrain facility of GM Daewoo Auto and Technology in Gunsan, South Korea.
Construction of the new diesel engine plant adjacent to one of GM Daewoo's three vehicle manufacturing facilities in Korea was completed on 31 March, 2005. Pilot production commenced on 1 September. The 19,200 square metre facility will have an annual manufacturing capacity of 250,000 engines.
In the run-up to the start of regular production in March 2006, the diesel engines are undergoing rigorous testing. This includes durability runs on new dynamometers at the powertrain engineering centre in Incheon, Korea, and real-world testing under the most severe climatic conditions around the world.
The facility will produce two variants of 2.0 litre four-valve single overhead cam common rail engines jointly developed by GM Daewoo Auto and Technology, GM Powertrain and VM Motori of Italy:
- The version with fixed geometry turbo (FGT) will develop 88 kW (120 ps) at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 280 Nm at 2,000 rpm.
- The high-performance version with variable geometry turbo (VGT) will turn out 110 kW (150 ps) at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 310 Nm at 2,000 rpm.
The engines will comply with Euro IV emission standards. They will feature design details that offer step improvements in noise, vibration and harshness. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) will be offered for both versions to further reduce the level of particulates present in exhaust gases.
The engines will be tuned to optimise the unique characteristics and requirements of each vehicle and will combine excellent drivability with exemplary fuel efficiency. The first application of the new engine will be in the Chevrolet Captiva SUV due on sale in summer 2006 with other models in the range to follow. Andy Carroll, Managing Director of Chevrolet UK said, 'The lack of a diesel engine range has been a big obstacle to our sales growth in the UK where diesel sales now exceed 35% of the market.' |
| Chevrolet Captiva, A compact SUV for Europe |
As the S3X concept, the vehicle made its first appearance at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, where it was enthusiastically received by the media and the public alike. The Chevrolet Captiva retains all the strong design elements of the concept and offers truly expressive style and a spacious, convenient interior featuring high quality fabrics and materials. The new Captiva (length/width/height: 4,639/1,849/1,726 mm) will be available with either five or seven seats as standard depending on the derivative. Customers will also have the choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive variants.
Captiva will be Chevrolet's first compact SUV with a diesel engine. With impressive on-road ride and handling, tailored to suit the requirements of European roads and customers, the vehicle will be available with a state of the art two-litre 150hp common-rail direct-injection diesel. There will also be a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 140hp and both will offer superb driving dynamics. Captiva will be the first model in Chevrolet's European range with an electronic stability program (ESP).
The diesel engine was developed in cooperation between GM Powertrain and VM in Italy. It is the first application of a family of diesel engines that will later become available in the range of Lacetti 5-door, 4-door and Station Wagon models.
Captiva will make its world premiere at the Geneva Show in March 2006 and its UK show debut at the British International Motor Show in London in July 2006. |
| Chevrolet Matiz 0.8SE Automatic |
For the first time, the Chevrolet Matiz is available with automatic transmission. The new Matiz, which was launched in June 2005, is already one of the most manoeuvrable cars on the road today and the automatic transmission adds a further dimension to the car's ease of use. Matiz is perfectly suited to an urban environment with its compact dimensions (length x width x height: 3,495 x 1,500 x 1,495 mm) and with its small turning circle of 9.20 m, the five-door Chevrolet Matiz fits into any parking space. The Matiz 0.8SE comes as a single derivative with automatic transmission and is available at Chevrolet showrooms from the end of November 2005 priced at £6,995.
The Matiz 0.8SE automatic has a four-speed auto transmission and is only available with the thoroughly updated 796 cc three-cylinder engine with 51.5 PS/50 BHP and a maximum torque of 71.5 Nm at 4,400 rpm. This combination gives the 0.8SE Matiz excellent performance in town and great agility in the stop/start conditions of a busy urban environment. It takes the five-door Matiz from 0 to 60 mph in 21.9 sec and gives it a top speed of 84 mph.
The new automatic transmission offers the full flexibility of a conventional four speed automatic but adds the sophistication of electronic control. This results in an engine that is perfectly matched to the transmission and ensures that both are working for maximum efficiency and therefore optimum fuel economy. Performance around town is extremely lively and both step-off and kick-down are very smooth. The 0.8 litre,
three-cylinder engine has already seen a 17% improvement in mpg over the previous model and the new Matiz 0.8SE automatic returns economy figures that are little different to the four-speed manual version - on the urban cycle the car returns
37.2 mpg and extra-urban, 61.4 mpg.
A number of fundamental improvements were made to the three-cylinder engine in this new Matiz. They include, above all, the valve control being equipped with roller cam followers made of aluminium instead of conventional rocker arms of steel. This cuts friction losses in the valve gear by 15 percent. The positive effect of this improvement is evident in the fuel consumption.
Thanks to the intelligent packaging and wheelbase of 2345 mm, the five-seater offers a comparatively large amount of space and a feeling of roominess. The boot volume is 170 litres to the VDA standard. With its modern, fresh design, clever utilisation of space, favourable price and optimised engineering, the Matiz certainly has what it takes to claim a significant slice of the growing segment it competes in.
The new Matiz 0.8SE automatic carries the comprehensive specification of its manual 1.0SE sister. Convenience features abound as befits a car that will be owned 75% by women with many likely to be carrying children.
Standard features in the new model include:
- Power Assisted Steering
